OPEN-WORLD ADVENTURE BEYOND THE OAKS IS ON KICKSTARTER RIGHT NOW

“Beyond the Oaks” invites players into the vast and mysterious boreal forests of Saskatchewan, the world’s largest unexplored region spanning over 1 billion acres. This open-world third-person shooter, currently seeking funding on Kickstarter, promises an immersive experience filled with dread and discovery.

Developed by indie creator Jay Cameron, whose journey in game design began in 2010, “Beyond the Oaks” follows Andrew, who ventures into an otherworldly forest only to become ensnared by its mysteries. The narrative unfolds as Andrew discovers a futuristic suit of armor housing E.M.I.L.I., an AI assistant in need of rescue from a mysterious curse.

The game features three distinct skill trees—combat mechanics, suit gadgets, and technology upgrades—allowing players to tailor their character’s progression to their preferred playstyle. Across a sprawling campaign, players unlock new abilities, solve puzzles, and engage in battles against a diverse array of enemies, from sorceresses to robotic drones.

Visually, “Beyond the Oaks” boasts detailed 3D Unreal Engine graphics with a blend of hi-tech sci-fi and fantasy elements, creating an atmospheric and slightly chilling aesthetic reminiscent of titles like “Alan Wake 2” and “Tears of the Kingdom.” The game’s ambitious design aims for ludonarrative harmony, where gameplay mechanics reflect thematic elements of freedom and control within the narrative.

Supported by a development grant from Creative Saskatchewan, the project has attracted notable voice talent such as Mike Anthony, Zoe Slusar, Tarzan Dan, Caitlynne Medrek, and Mark Meer. As of now, “Beyond the Oaks” has achieved nearly one-third of its funding goal with 44 days remaining in its Kickstarter campaign.
